 Spinal Curvatures and Scoliosis
Before the age of 10, young children seldom complain of backache. When they do, it's usually for a day or so, and then the problem is not mentioned again. Often times, a vertebrae may come out of alignment (vertebral subluxation) and then stay out of alignment. The child's pliable spine adapts to the situation and hence the old adage "as a tree is bent, so shall it grow" applies to the child's spine. Yes, this spinal misalignment may cause a spinal curvature and/or a scoliosis to develop.
A curvature is an abnormal spinal contour and scoliosis is a type of curvature that has an abnormal lateral bend. If the problem of a spinal misalignment is detected early in a young child, it can often be straightened and a curvature avoided.
Regular chiropractic examinations for children, especially after falls and/or sports activities, can detect these spinal misalignments (subluxations). A chiropractic adjustment can correct the spinal misalignments and return the spine to its proper position.
There certainly are other causes of scoliosis and curvatures. A short leg, pelvic (hip) distortions, certain diseases all can contribute to curvature development, but early detection and chiropractic care may prevent further curvature. Surgery and bracing are sometimes necessary, but control and reduction through chiropractic methods should be a primary consideration in all cases of scoliosis and should be tried first before other drastic efforts are resorted to.
